Weekend and evening alternatives to the DMV in the Sacramento area

The short answer

If you can't get to a DMV office during its hours, you have four main options in the Sacramento area: DMV online services, phone or mail for renewals, a self-service DMV kiosk, or a DMV business partner, which is a private business authorized by the DMV to handle certain registration services. Which one fits depends on what you need done.

Option 1: DMV online services

Many vehicle tasks can be done on the DMV website at any hour. The DMV says you can renew your vehicle registration online as soon as you receive your renewal notice, and sellers can file a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability online. The DMV's Virtual Office also accepts some title transfer requests.

Good for: simple renewals with no problems on the record, and reporting a sale. Not good for: anything that needs a physical inspection, such as a VIN verification, or a renewal blocked by unpaid parking tickets.

Option 2: Phone or mail renewal

The DMV also accepts registration renewals by phone and by mail. These take longer to arrive than a counter transaction, so avoid them if your registration is about to expire.

Option 3: DMV kiosks

DMV kiosks are self-service touchscreen machines at DMV offices and some retail locations, such as grocery stores. The DMV says kiosks can handle registration renewals, Planned Non-Operation filings, proof of insurance, replacement registration cards and stickers, and some driver's license renewals.

Kiosks at retail locations are available during that location's business hours, which may include evenings and weekends. Credit and debit cards are accepted, and some locations accept cash. Use the DMV's kiosk locator to find one and check its hours.

Good for: printing a sticker on the spot for a straightforward renewal. Not good for: title transfers, out-of-state vehicles or anything that needs a person to review documents.

Option 4: DMV business partners

The DMV describes auto registration business partners as businesses authorized by the DMV to handle certain registration services. Depending on the business, that can include registration renewals with stickers printed on site, title transfers, new registrations, license plate replacements, proof of insurance, address changes and vehicle verifications.

Business partners are private. The DMV notes that additional fees may be applied by the partner, on top of the DMV's own fees, and that wait times are often much shorter than at a field office. Hours are set by each business, and some are open evenings or Saturdays.

Good for: title transfers, expired registrations, out-of-state vehicles and anything where you want someone to check the paperwork before it is submitted. Keep in mind: driver's license and ID card services go through the DMV, not registration businesses. Some vehicle inspections, such as revived salvage verifications, must be done by the DMV or the CHP.

How to choose: step by step

1. Name the task. Renewal, title transfer, out-of-state registration, VIN verification, salvage or something else.
2. If it is a clean renewal, try DMV online services or a kiosk first.
3. If there is a problem (expired registration, missing title, smog, a lien, an out-of-state title), a business partner or DMV office can review your documents.
4. Check the hours on the DMV website for field offices and kiosks, or call the business.
5. Bring everything: the notice or title, smog certification, insurance, ID and payment.
