Elk Grove does not have a DMV field office of its own. For the 95624 ZIP code, the DMV's location finder lists Sacramento South, at 7775 La Mancha Way, as the closest. It is much nearer to you than we are, and it is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm (9am to 5pm on Wednesdays). For simple renewals, there is also a DMV kiosk inside the Safeway at 5021 Laguna Blvd, open 5am to midnight.
So when does a trip to Citrus Heights make sense? When those hours are the problem. California DMV field offices are closed on weekends and generally close at 5pm on weekdays. We're open Saturdays and until 9pm Monday through Saturday, by appointment. It also makes sense when a transfer, an inherited car or a salvage vehicle is complicated enough that you want someone to review it with you first.
The route north from Elk Grove
From most of Elk Grove, take Highway 99 north. Near downtown Sacramento, 99 feeds into the Capital City Freeway (Business 80). Follow it northeast until it merges with I-80 east, then take exit 98 for Greenback Lane and Elkhorn Blvd. Turn right on Greenback Lane and left on Auburn Blvd to reach 6381 Auburn Blvd, Suite A.
From the west side, near Laguna Blvd and I-5, you can take I-5 north to the US 50 and Business 80 east interchange downtown, which puts you on the same Capital City Freeway. OpenStreetMap routing puts the trip at roughly 25 to 27 miles. Allow about 35 to 50 minutes each way, and more at weekday rush hour.

Because you are driving farther, call (916) 595-8128 before you leave. We will go through your documents by phone so nothing is missing when you arrive. A Saturday or late-evening slot also keeps you off Highway 99 during the weekday commute, and Costco, Sam's Club and Walmart are close by if you want to combine errands.
